Cartwright - L'anse au Clair MHA Yvonne Jones says she will seek the Liberal nomination for the federal Labrador seat held by MP Peter Penashue, who announced his resignation Thursday over 2011 election donations.

The Conservative intergovernmental affairs minister resigned from his cabinet portfolio and his seat in the House of Commons and repaid $30,000 in “ineligible” campaign donations.

Penashue, however, says he’ll seek re-election in a byelection now that he’s cleared the air.

Jones could not be reached by The Telegram Thursday afternoon or today, amid rumours of her decision to seek the nomination in the riding.

However, she has posted on Twitter today that she will seek the Liberal nomination.
