The body of a fisheries and wildlife officer who drowned after his snowmobile went through the ice on Eastern Blewy Pond Thursday has been recovered.

The RCMP’s underwater recovery team and Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers recovered Howard Lavers’ body shortly before 5 p.m. Friday. The body was taken to the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders, police said. No autopsy is planned.

Three fisheries and wildlife officers were riding over the ice on Eastern Blewy Pond, near Blue Mountain, on snowmobiles Thursday afternoon. After they broke through the ice, two of the officers made it to shore, but Lavers didn’t. The other officers tried spreading tree branches on the ice so they could crawl to Lavers, but they could not get to their fellow officer in time.
