A forest fire at CFB Goose Bay that had calmed to a few hot spots overnight has re-ignited and has moved North off the base, forcing water bombers and helicopters to concentrate along Perimeter Road and Landfill Road.
The fire regained strength around mid-morning according to Mike Barnes from the Commissionaires, who is manning the North gate at the base.
“The fire had calmed down overnight, but had picked up again around 10:00 a.m.” he said.
Barnes says there are a few cabins along Perimeter Road, but the RCMP evacuated anyone in the area yesterday and that the RCMP have been in and out most of the morning to make sure no one has wandered into the area.
The helicopters and two water bombers are attacking the latest fire from the air, while almost 40 firefighters from the base and Goose Bay battle on the ground.
Barnes says right now the evacuation, if any is on a standby and will depend on the fire and wind conditions.
So far there hasn’t been any damage to structures no one was injured. Traffic is moving normally through the area with many people pulling off the road to watch the helicopters and water bombers as they fly overhead.
More details will be provided as they become available.
