Union local president Darren Cove rallied the union troops this afternoon with bullhorn cries of 'who are we—steelworkers!" and "what do we want—a better deal!"

More than 50 of the workers, who are presently on strike from work at Voisey's Bay Nickel Mine in Labrador, as well as their families took part in the march from North Mart store in the Valley to the town hall.

Mr. Cove said the rally had two purposes- to celebrate Labour Day this coming Monday and to commemorate 400 days of being on the picket line.

Talks are scheduled to restart between the Steelworkers Union and Vale for the 19 and 20 of September.

The two groups have already tried unsuccessfully on a number of occasions to negotiate a deal for union workers to return to work at the mine site.

"It is all about solidarity in our union." Where did I hear that before? Oh yeah, I remember... that was the chant by the union boyz in Sudbury for the better part of a year, along with "We went out together, we'll go back together". Well guess what... the Sudbury boyz all went back to work and left their Newfie brudders out to hang. The funniest part is that in the end, they accepted all the "changes" that they swore they never would. They didn't want a cap on the nickel bonus... it's now capped! They didn't want to change from the existing DB pension to a DC pension for new employees... new employees (if there ever are any) will now get a DC pension! Most important concession and the one that union leaders talk the least about is the changes in contract language that does away with much of the past foolishness by the union, such as 4,000 pending grievances at the end of the last contract. Now the company can fire people and already have for conduct that in the past was 'accepted'. No more video players and XBoxes in the lunchrooms. All the beds have been removed. No more coming in late and going home early. The boyz are now expected to work for a living and some of them don't like it. It took the boyz in Sudbury almost a year to come to their senses. How long will it take for the boyz in Voisey's Bay?

You have it totally wrong, we weren't celebrating the fact we were on the picket line for 400 days. It is all about solidarity in our union. And the obvious thing is you shouldn't comment until you walk in our shoes and walk the walk not talk the talk.

400 days on the picket line is nothing to celebrate. There is an obvious lack of leadership on both sides and both sides have lost this battle.

Global economic crisis + lower commodity prices + high unemployment......you know where this is going...it should not take people 400 days to see the obvious.
