St. John’s — The shortlist for the 2013 Heritage and History Book Awards was announced Wednesday, and five local authors have made the cut, in non-fiction and poetry categories.

Patricia Grattan’s “City Seen: Artists’ Views of St. John’s 1785-2010,” George Gregoire’s “Walk With My Shadow,” and Shannon Ryan’s “A History of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic to 1818” have made the shortlist in the non-fiction category, while Mark Callanan’s “Gift Horse” and Robin Durnford’s “A Lovely Gutting,” have been nominated for poetry.

The book awards are presented each year, but alternate between poetry and non-fiction one year and children’s/young adult books the next. Presented by the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador, the awards are given to works that “exemplify excellence in the interpretation of the history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

This year’s winners will be announced on Dec.10 at the Ship Pub in St. John’s, starting at 7:30 p.m. The shortlisted authors will read from their work at that time. Admission is free.
