Canadian comedian brings ‘Late Bloomer’ tour to St. John’s tonight

The last time she was here, a little more than a year ago, she was dishing out relationship advice.
This time, she’s offering you some more advice.

Comedian Debra DiGiovanni — perhaps best known for her appearance on “Last Comic Standing,” and her roles as a resident comedian on MuchMusic’s “Video on Trial” and featured panellist on The Comedy Network’s “Match Game” — is performing at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre tonight as part of her cross-country “Late Bloomer” tour, in connection with Just for Laughs. She’s got a Gemini award, has been named Best Female Comic three times by the Canadian Comedy Awards, and has recently moved to L.A. from her native Toronto.

Though she’s travelled the country doing stand-up before, the “Late Bloomer Tour” is so named because it’s her first time going cross-country solo.

“Dear NFLD, do you have power? Am I coming to see you tomorrow? I need some serious replies,” DiGiovanni posted on Twitter during an airport break Tuesday afternoon, receiving more than a dozen replies telling her yes, giving her updates on the weather and offering her a place to stay if the power goes again.

“Worst case scenario, we’ll show you music videos on our phones you can make fun of. Until the batteries die,” wrote one Twitter follower.

The St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre was closed earlier this week due to the power outage, and forced to reschedule at least one event. However, things are back to normal, and DiGiovanni’s show is going ahead as planned. There are still a few tickets left. They’re $37.50, HST and service charge included, and are available at the Arts and Culture Centre box office, by calling 729-3900, or online at www.artsandculturecentre.com.

In the meantime, DiGiovanni has given The Telegram her Top 10 things to do during a blackout.

10 things to do when you’re stuck without power:

1. Make out with boys.

2. Make out with girls.

3. Practise kissing on your hand.

4. Make dirty shadow puppets.

5. You and your cat can work on that love ballad duet.

6. Spy on your neighbours — save the battery in your  night-vision goggles!

7. Feel around. You might get lucky.

8. Empty the fridge into your mouth.

9. Practise your scary noises. Trust me — you’ll need them.

10. PANIC!

Love, Debra!
