Trucks clogging capital's downtown: Devine

Coun. Kim Devine says the city of Charlottetown needs to have a serious look at how deliveries are made in the downtown and the effect it has on traffic congestion.

At councils public meeting earlier this month, Devine complained that delivery trucks are stopping in the middle of the citys smallest streets and blocking traffic coming behind them.

Its not just oil trucks that the councillor is concerned about, its delivery trucks in general, whether its oil or supplies for restaurants and other businesses.

She said in some cases motorists have no choice but to back up and find another way to their destination.

That's creating a dangerous situation. They back all the way up the street and into the intersection, Devine said in an interview, reiterating her concerns at councils meeting.

Devine said she has watched as tractor-trailers have completely blocked Queen Street and the driver manoeuvres the rig into a loading zone.

We have to figure out how we can make the delivery of goods in the downtown more efficient than we are.

Devine said since the Confederation Bridge opened 10 years ago, the size of trucks has been getting bigger while the size of the downtown hasnt changed.

She acknowledged that some trucks, such as oil trucks, are restricted in where they can stop and still be able to reach an oil tank.

One option she suggested is to restrict the time of day oil trucks can make deliveries in the downtown, but the problem there she said is that not everyone is on automatic delivery.

You cant completely eliminate the problem but we need to start addressing the situation. People are getting really annoyed.

Coun. Danny Redmond, chair of the police committee, which is responsible for administering civic bylaws, is going to have his committee look into the matter.

Why not bring back the trains? Get the trucks off our roads and prevent them from crumbling. Barge the railcars across from the other side and run them to Ch'town, S'side, Souris, Montague, etc. Asphalt is too expensive to maintain and this would get the trucks off the roads, leaving them for cars. Have warehouses and small delivery vehicles to move things to the final destination.

The public ire seems to rise everytime flagrant misuse of public funds are at stake.

When I think of 'hand in my pocket', Provincial Treasurer Mitch Murphy's unauthorized use of a government issued credit card for ceramic floor tiles and a personal fishing trip come to mind. As does former Minister Mildred Dover's misuse of a government credit card for a dress.

In both cases these 'honourable' members said they simply used the wrong card. My, how convenient. Further, the payback arrangement was loosey goosey as it required the Minister's assitant to flag the flagrant misuse of the governemnt credit card and point out to their BOSS (the minster) to repay government. I can't imagine an assitant jumping up and down to seek repayment...

These little things tend to get under a taxpayers skin. Free suits, attempts to buy personal items at the public's cost. Just small stuff like that, nothing more, nothing less.

Could the Councillor's hefty clothing allowance be used to purchase Crossing Guard Uniforms ?

It certainly would be a cost savings to hard working tax payers like me.

Imagine City funds being properly directed to City services, not diverted to Councillors wardrobes. How many black suits are needed by Councillors? By my count, some Councillors have 5 and 6 black suits on the tax payers dime. This sis clearly excessive and is in line with gouging at the Council trough without accountability.

Here's hoping sound fiscal management will prevail to allow Crossing Guards to direct downtown traffic.

i like the idea of returning the trains... imagine 1 train a day instead of 100-200 trucks like we have now. build a yard out in royalty junction/winsloe/brackley and have small delivery trucks move everything into the city. do the same at slemon park for s'side the cost of putting the tracks back in is far less than the cost of 20 years of deteriorating asphalt like we have now since the trains were abandoned in 89. we don't have fixed link adjustment $ from the feds anymore to rebuild our roads like we did in the mid-90s - we're on our own. don't allow heavy trucks on our roads and definitely don't allow b-trains and a-trains - bring back the real trains and it'll solve a lot of our problems

Well, It's like jason the trucker from pei said. You really have to stop and think how everything you buy in stores gets to the stores. How do you think Us Truckers feel everytime someone gets cranky and gives us the finger, like that's going to solve anything. I think the city should put more thought into building more parkades in the city that would help get cars off the sides of the streets, did you ever try going down a one way street in the middle of the day? that's where our traffic congestiong comes from, open your eyes a little wider Mrs. Devine. don't blame the trucks for clogging city streets, they are not to blame for this situation.

That's what we should change the name of Charlotteown to.
How can someone like this represent us?
Can we not do something about her?

Geez....what would we do for entertainment without the Charlottetown City Council.....if Kim Devine feels that the biggest problem that the City of Charlottetown has, as she sees it , is the problem of trucks making deliveries, then I think maybe she should try driving one of these trucks, Geez its hard enough to get around old charlottetown driving a van....

    Pave my road
    - June 21st, 2010 at 20:04:07

The real misues of public funds is in road construction....

Millions of dollars handed out willy nilly by our 'public servants' (with the minister of highways and prem's office watching behind the 1-way mirror)... This is white collar crime by our elected representatives at its finest.

Don't tell me that 'only roads in dire need of repair' get the first dibs... Why do paving projects end at county lines, rural community lines, electoral boundaries, etc.?

They should just issue every car on PEI an E-pass like they use for the toll highway in NS and charge everyone by the # of kms they travel. And they could track how many cars go down specific roads and dole out the money raised by the transponders for the roads that receive the most traffic.

And then they could drop the gas tax a bit. I don't mind paying for my usage. I just don't like PEI politicians deciding where road construction money gets spent...

this is rediculous! Stop truck traffic. Everytime you purchuse gas or buy groceries think how it gets here. It only takes a couple of minutes for a truck to back into its destination....I really don't think anyone's day is that overly jam packed with stuff the need to do they can't wait for a second for a truck to move....if that were the case lets start by removing all traffic lights you have to stop for them...don't you give us a break were just doing our job. We have families to support too!

Well that was a stupid thing to say!!

Devine said since the Confederation Bridge opened 10 years ago, the size of trucks has been getting bigger while the size of the downtown hasnt changed.

When did the size of a 53 foot trailer extend? I think I missed the memo on that one!! I think Kim Devine needs to get her facts straight before she goes and states something stupid like that! OOPS TOO LATE!!!! I guess the next time she goes out for supper, in downtown Charlottetown, she will be happy that the extra long truck delivered their supplies other wise she will have to go home and cook! OH WAIT! Where did she get her groceries from?? An extra long truck again!!

I do not like the idea of trains (to put the rails back in now would be too expensive) or the idea of having the delivery drivers work at night...not a good idea. They already work early mornings to late evenings spending less time with their families. Also, it is already hard enough to find workers willing to work nights let alone truck drivers who have probably gotten out of long haul (so they can have some sort of normal workday), plus do you think the businesses are going to want to have someone working to receive these deliveries. Last time I checked most businesses downtown are closed by 6:00 pm.
