Why are you running for council?
I have resided with my family in Happy Valley-Goose Bay for the past 23 years and I love the town and want to maintain both its uniqueness and diversity. My experience of resolving issues within our community brings a new voice and a different perspective in creating solutions. If elected, I would bring an open mind, a studious approach to solve problem issues and make hard decisions when necessary.
I have been frustrated by the inability of our municipal government to implement existing by-laws and policies and the lack of progressive municipal leadership. We have to be less reactive and less divisive with a strong pro-active leadership to give a clear direction to our Town’s governance. As a Councillor, I would foster a unified chamber to define a clear direction for our Town at a crucial time in our community’s growth.
What are your top three priorities?
1. Town Fiscal and Administrative Management
I will work towards responsible financial management of Town operations to take measures to reduce financial debt and ensure residents and businesses are taxed fairly. Collection of outstanding taxes should be high priority for our Town. I will look for increased efficiency of the Town to provide better services to residences and businesses while keeping taxes low.
2. Lower land costs.
I will seek alternative land development strategies to make home owning more affordable for residents. We need to make land development more competitive, return to Town developed land and increase taxes on vacant lots to encourage vacant lot sales and development. This would reduce the demand for additional infrastructure, lowering Taxes.
3. Address issues concerning municipal infrastructure and quality of life.
I will advocate for a new regional multipurpose indoor recreational facility with a swimming pool, but not solely on the backs of taxpayers of the Town. I support the enhancement of green areas, community beautification and the addition of safe playgrounds. I will lobby the provincial government to increase capacity for long term care facility to meet needs of seniors. Poor water quality in the Valley has to be addressed. Although the water quality tests are within the guidelines, there is still a bad taste to the water and it corrodes hot water tanks prematurely. We have to seek new sources of good water and also increase our water capacity.
Why should people vote for you?
I am committed to work with honesty and integrity for the residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay with a vision of economic growth and prosperity while maintaining community, cultural, environmental and quality of life values. I have experience working with provincial and federal governments and have a strong union background to enable me to address staffing issues fairly. I have always been a community volunteer, organizer and participant in Town activities. I am an educated, experienced family oriented candidate with business experience and knowledge of Town issues and concerns of our residents.
