Why are you running for council?
I decided to run for Mayor after I grew concerned and frustrated with the way the town is evolving and my own experience and education provided me the confidence to offer the people a different vision. After visiting 1500 homes, it became clear people were looking for change, a different approach and hope.
The everyday person in town is not benefiting from development the way we should be. We are paying a very high price. While some have profited, the majority of us have maintained a constant wage, our cost of living has gone through the roof, our infrastructure has deteriorated, people have become frustrated, and all of this has led to a feeling that our quality of life has decreased. This should not be the feeling during a time of economic opportunity.
What are your top three priorities if elected?
The number one issue that people have expressed is the affordability and the cost of living in Happy Valley – Goose Bay. The price of land, building, groceries, transportation, and the proposed increase in hydro rates has made our town unaffordable for a growing number of people. Young professionals, families, double income couples, middle and low income are all experiencing this reality and it bothers me that our quality of life would be affected so much during a time of an economic boom.
Secondly, our town deserves and desperately needs a recreation complex and other municipal infrastructure that assists people with their cultural and recreational pursuits such as trail systems for example.
It is my view that Happy Valley – Goose Bay is the Capital of Labrador. It is our home base and it is part of our culture to access the land, whether that be through using our all terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, cabin dwelling, wood harvesting, hunting, fishing, trapping, boating, wild berry harvesting, hiking, kayaking, running, or canoeing.
My third priority includes development we can be proud of. The municipality needs to be hands on with development to ensure prices are reasonable, there is value for money and developments are walkable, have street lights, sand is mitigated, there are places for people to convene, and areas for children to play. It is important that people feel satisfied with their investments and all of us can clearly see our return on tax dollars invested.
Why should people vote for you?
People should vote for me because of my practical management and leadership experience, competence, a genuine interest in the whole community and a win-win consensus based approach that will ensure a new council is successful and professionally represents our town.
This summer I have worked as hard as anyone; listened to people's concerns and completed all my homework. As the Mayor of Happy Valley – Goose Bay I feel that I will inherently be representative of most people in town by just being myself. Furthermore, my approach will bring people together, restore balance, and ensure the future is not one of clear winners and losers.
