Why are you running for council?
As a long term resident of the community I have a vested interest in the manner of how the community is developed. With the tremendous amount of economic growth, now is the time to make decisions that will maximize benefits for the community. To have sustainable growth, we must have long term planning utilizing the present benefits. This will require a strong council that is forward thinking. I believe that I have the capacity to be a productive member of such a council.
What are your top three priorities?
The most immediate and long term issue is that of planned land development. Our municipal plan must reflect the values of our community, as how our town is built will either enable or deter the growth of these values. Present issues that need to be addressed are: affordable housing; enhanced physical activity — sidewalks, green spaces and playgrounds; and managed growth. The window of opportunity to have such a planned community is quickly shrinking under the pressures of development. A strong vision is needed in the creation of a community plan based upon enhancing the quality of life of our community while encouraging progressive development.
In conjunction with the planned development is the need for a centrally located Sportsplex. This facility should meet the needs of all ages, from youth to senior. Along with improved infrastructure there should be an equal growth in program offerings. This could be done through the use of partner organizations such as the YMCA/YWCA to provide programming. Improved infrastructure and enhanced programming for all ages must go hand in hand.
To support the continued improvement of our community without increasing the tax burden of our citizens, we need to look at the opportunities that current and future development present. Have we focused on the question “What can these organizations do for us, or are we maximizing our tax base with these organizations?” Presently, there are many benefitting from the current projects. My question is “Is our community maximizing this opportunity for long term benefits?”
Why should people vote for you?
In my thirty plus years of living in Labrador, I have held numerous positions in my professional and volunteer career. These positions have equipped me with varied experiences in dealing with the public, how to maximize change, and long term planning. I believe that that these experiences will do much to enhance this council’s ability to maximize the opportunities that are now available to us. I also believe that council should be accountable to the public that they serve. Any member of the public should be confident in the fact that their concerns will be listened to and actioned. Every concern raised should be addressed and the individual who raises it should be communicated with, either with a solution or a non-solution, but every question should be answered. To vote for me is to vote for an individual who believes in the future of this community.
