Residents of the Upper Lake Melville area showed their true Labrador generousity over the last couple of months, by helping raise $30,155.74 for disaster relief in the Phillipines, after the devastating typhoon last month. The money was raised through an on-line Facebook auction, cash boxes at local businesses and other fundraisers. All monies raised for the relief efforts were being matched by the Canadian government — dollar for dollar up until Dec. 23rd — which brought the total amount to $60, 311.48. The monies raised locally were split between UNICEF Canada and Red Cross Canada for distribution in the Phillipines. The Royal Bank in Happy Valley-Goose Bay helped manage the funds and transactions. Taking part in the presentation were, from left: Kye Hillier; Erwin Ponce, Jay Fawcett, Royal Bank Manager, Kukai Hunter, Catherine Montague Younge, and Kathryn Kelley, Royal Bank Customer Service Representative.
