Northern Lights Dog Sledding held a charity dog sled ride earlier this month to raise money for a Carbonear family, whose three-year-old daughter, Erica Thornhill, needs a bone marrow transplant.
Scott Hudson and his wife, Lori, own the dog team and the kennel located on Transmitter Road in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The couple figured they could use their dog sledding passion as a fundraiser for the family. People paid $25 each for their chance to ride a dog team, just like in the olden days.
"Erica's dad is a friend of mine, and I was thinking of ways, before Christmas, to come up with a few dollars for them," says Lori Hudson. " So I mentioned it to Scott, that we should do a fundraiser, a dog team ride, and he was game to go."
Erica, who suffers from acute myeloid leukemia, is in Toronto to receive the transplant. Her parents are with her and the family needs money for things like food and lodging while they are in Toronto.
The event raised $400. Erica's father, Robert Thornhill, is grateful for the support.
"All of my family thinks that what Lori and her husband have done is amazing," says Thornhill. "Also we are very thankful for the people that came out and have shown their support. It's amazing to see the good in a lot of people. We really can't find the words to express how great everyone has been to us. The support of these people have taken us through the rough times."
The Thornhills will be in Toronto for about another three months. They are still accepting donations to help cover their expenses. Anyone who would like to help out can log onto folkartlullaby@gmail.com, and use the password erica, to use etransfer to make an online donation.
Lori and Scott Hudson would like to thank everyone who donated to the dog sled fundraiser and those who volunteered their time.
