“We shall neither fail nor falter; we shall not weaken or tire….give us the tools and we will finish the job.”
That quote from Winston Churchill must have been on the minds of the 5 Wing Auto Club Executive and Supervisors last December when they donated their time and labour during its second annual Winter Tire Change for Charity campaign.
The campaign went from December 1st through to the 15th, with club members hard at work from 6:00 PM to 10 PM weekdays, and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on weekends. A big undertaking from those volunteering considering they also had full time jobs and families to attend to. Their hard work and dedication paid off though, because the Winter Tire Change for Charity was a resounding success.
In the first year of the campaign, $1300 was raised, and this past year the amount of $1200 was presented to the Goose Bay Friendship center food bank, for a total of $2500 since the charity was started.
The Winter Tire Change for Charity first came into being in 2010 and was started by Captain Robin Major, 5 Wing Chaplain, and Sergeant (Sgt) Bruce Lauder. Together they decided to change summer tires for snow tires at 5 Wing Goose Bay’s Auto Club, collecting donations in order to raise money for the local food bank.
The Charity also graciously received donations of cleaning supplies and weights for wheel balancing from local Happy Valley – Goose Bay companies.
“I would like to thank Burdens Janitorial Services and Speedy Glass for their material donations and also the Auto Club Executive and Supervisors that donated their time and hard work to this cause.” Said Sgt Lauder, “I would also like to thank the many patrons who generously donated to this worth while event that benefited so many in this community during this Christmas season.”
